Interesting article. This was of interest because our portal Oneindia.in, is the largest Indian language portal

As of now internet users in India are bilingual (English and local language) we still have English titles in pages (rather English and the language)

@Dawn
Thanks for your comment.

I am not sure if I understand your question correctly, but sub domains are still treated as separate entities by search engines.

What Google started doing, is not listing more than 2 sub domains of the same domain in the search results.

I have a question about the sub-domains. I though that in late 2007 Google started looking at sub-domains as a NON-seperate entity especially in instances where the sub-domain URL had a very concrete structure and was easily identifiable. Doesn't this lead to duplicate content issues in the slighly different forms of English throughout the world which would necessitate the use of no index, no follow reducing the number of indexed pages? I guess my same question exists for multiple pages of slightly varied English pages within a main domain.

@Brian
Thanks!

You are misinterpreting the International SEO recommendations.

With the International SEO tip #9 is ment that you should not blindly translate titles and so on, but adapt to the country specific terms.

Good luck!

Eduard, this is good post. I'm prepping to kick off some optimization for non-English sites and came across this post.

I'm curious about #9 - Don't translate titles and meta tags. Does this mean that if I am building a .de site with German content that you recommend not having the page titles and meta descriptions in German? I'm seeing different when experimenting in German SERPs. It would seem to me that if the site is German and has German content then the titles and descriptions should match.

Just wanted to see if maybe I wasn't interpreting your recommendation correctly.

Again, great post.

@Dave
That's also what I found and what the article above states.

But I think it's best for a local targeted site to host in that country on that country specific TLD

I found that getting a .com domain and getting lot of US based links can get you a good position in almost any local search engine (.de .nl .be .fr.) Of course that's only for the ENG keywords but still a lot of people are using ENG keyword (combinations)in stead of their own language...depends of course on what they are searching for.

Good summary indeed :o
